slot · Garmisch-Partenkirchen A ruined hilltop castle above Garmisch-Partenkirchen, built between about 1180 and 1230 and from 1249 the administrative seat of the Prince-Bishopric of Freising's County of Werdenfels. Abandoned after 1632, its stone was later quarried for local churches, and what remains today are sections of the outer wall and the base of its keep.

stadion · Garmisch-Partenkirchen The large ski jumping hill on Gudiberg hill above Garmisch-Partenkirchen, built for the 1936 Winter Olympics and rebuilt several times since, most recently in 2007-08. Its outrun doubled as the Olympic opening and closing ceremony stadium, and the hill still hosts a World Cup jump every New Year's Day as part of the Four Hills Tournament.

A 702-metre limestone gorge cut by the Partnach stream below Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in places more than 80 metres deep. A path developed for visitors since 1912 follows the rock face through tunnels and a lit gallery blasted after a 1991 rockfall, passing close beneath waterfalls and overhangs.

turistattraktion · Garmisch-Partenkirchen At 2,962 metres, the Zugspitze is Germany's highest mountain, on the border with Austria in the Wetterstein range. Cable cars from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Eibsee, plus a cogwheel railway, carry visitors to summit platforms and the Münchner Haus hut, with views reaching into four countries on a clear day; Germany's largest glaciers lie just below the peak.
