A former Augustinian priory on Berchtesgaden's main square, founded around 1102 and secularised in 1803, after which it became a Bavarian royal residence; it is still a part-time home of the Wittelsbach family today, alongside its museum. Guided tours visit about 30 of its 214 rooms, including period furniture, armouries and a 1750 Baroque cabinet with 72 drawers.

Sehenswürdigkeit · Berchtesgaden A working salt mine above the Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden, first recorded as a commercial operation in the 12th century and formally founded in 1517. Visitors put on miners' overalls and ride an electric train deep into the mountain, then cross a wooden slide and an underground lake by boat before returning to daylight.

A museum on the Obersalzberg mountain above Berchtesgaden, opened in 1999 and run by the Institute of Contemporary History in Munich, documenting the site's use as a second seat of Nazi power from the 1930s. Exhibits cover the Nazi regime and the Obersalzberg complex itself, and a short tunnel leads into part of the wartime bunker system built beneath it in 1943-45.

Historische Stätte · Berchtesgaden The Kehlsteinhaus, known in English as the Eagle's Nest, is a building completed in 1938 on the Kehlstein ridge above Obersalzberg, built for the Nazi party by Martin Bormann and used by Adolf Hitler for receptions. It now operates seasonally as a restaurant and beer garden, reached by a mountain road, shuttle bus and a lift cut through the rock.
