Whitby Abbey
Historische Stätte · WhitbyWhitby Abbey is the ruin of a Benedictine abbey church on the East Cliff above Whitby, on the site of a monastery founded in 657 by King Oswiu of Northumbria with Hild as its first abbess. The Synod of Whitby met here in 664. Beside the Gothic ruins, a museum in the 17th-century Cholmley House tells the story of the headland.
