monument · Fribourg-en-Brisgau The Martinstor is one of two surviving medieval gate towers in Freiburg's old town. Timbers date it to around 1202, with first written mention in 1238. A 1901 rebuild under architect Carl Schäfer raised the tower from 22 to 60 metres and added its neo-Gothic cap. A McDonald's now occupies its ground-floor archway.

monument · Fribourg-en-Brisgau The Schwabentor is one of two surviving medieval gate towers in Freiburg's old town, built around 1250. It was heightened and given its crow-stepped gable and onion dome around 1900, then partly simplified again in 1954. A tram line and road now pass through its arch, and a private tin-figure museum occupies the tower.
