The Martinstor is one of two surviving medieval gate towers in Freiburg's old town. Timbers date it to around 1202, with first written mention in 1238. A 1901 rebuild under architect Carl Schäfer raised the tower from 22 to 60 metres and added its neo-Gothic cap. A McDonald's now occupies its ground-floor archway.
