historische plek · Almería The Almería air raid shelters are a network of tunnels dug in 1937 and 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, to protect about 40,000 civilians from bombing. Designed by the municipal architect Guillermo Langle, they run for more than 4 km under the city. A restored gallery of almost 1 km under the Paseo de Almería, with a recreated operating theatre, is visited on guided tours.

Almería Cathedral, dedicated to the Incarnation, was built between 1524 and 1562 after an earthquake destroyed its predecessor. Its late Gothic and Renaissance church has the thick walls, towers and battlements of a fortress. Inside are a carved Renaissance choir and an alabaster tomb, both by Juan de Orea.

The Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía is the Andalusian regional government's centre for photography, created in 1992 and based in the former Liceo Artístico y Literario building in the old town of Almería. It shows changing photography exhibitions and also runs workshops, publications and a library on Andalusia's photographic heritage.

The Doña Pakyta Museum of Art occupies Casa Montoya, a Basque-style villa built in 1928 by Guillermo Langle and left to the city by its owner, Francisca Díaz Torres. Opened in 2015, it traces almost a century of art made in Almería, with a focus on the Indaliano group of painters founded in the 1940s.

The Alcazaba of Almería is a walled Moorish citadel on a hill above the old town, begun in the 10th century under Abd al-Rahman III, the first caliph of al-Andalus. Its three enclosures hold gardens, cisterns, the remains of a governor's palace and a mosque, and a castle the Catholic Monarchs built after the Christian conquest.

The Museum of Almería is the province's archaeological museum, founded in 1934 and housed since 2006 in a building by Ignacio García Pedrosa and Ángela García de Paredes. It centres on the Copper and Bronze Age cultures of Los Millares and El Argar, excavated by Luis Siret, and continues into the Roman and Islamic periods. A stratigraphic column runs through its three floors.
