The Niederwald Monument stands in the forest above Rüdesheim, built between 1871 and 1883 by sculptor Johannes Schilling and architect Karl Weißbach to mark the founding of the German Empire. A 12.5-metre bronze Germania, holding the Imperial Crown and Sword, tops the 38-metre structure, reachable by cable car, chairlift, road or trail.
