About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, a city of canals and gabled houses known for the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and Rembrandt. The canal ring wraps around the old centre, where the Royal Palace Amsterdam (Koninklijk Paleis) stands on Dam Square and the Oude Kerk rises in the Red Light District. Most visitors spend two to three days here. The centre is walkable, trams and the metro cover the wider city, and ferries cross the IJ to the north. The I amsterdam City Card combines public transport with entry to many of the sights listed here. The Van Gogh Museum uses timed entry, so book ahead.
