Särkänniemi is an amusement park owned by the City of Tampere on a peninsula in Lake Näsijärvi, about a kilometre from the city centre. It has more than 30 rides, among them roller coasters and two water rides, and the area also holds an aquarium, a planetarium, the Doghill animal park and the Näsinneula tower. The park opened in 1975.
Näsinneula is a 168-metre observation tower in the Särkänniemi area of Tampere, built in 1970–1971 to a design by Pekka Ilveskoski. Lifts climb to the observation deck at 120 metres, where there is a café, and a revolving restaurant one floor above turns once every 45 minutes. Lights at the top of the mast show the weather forecast.
Pyynikki Observation Tower is a 26-metre tower of red granite on the Pyynikki esker ridge, completed in 1929 to a design by city architect Vilho Kolho. It stands about 75 metres above Lake Pyhäjärvi; a lift and stairs lead to the open top, which looks over Tampere and the lakes Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. A café at its foot bakes doughnuts.
