M Leuven is the city's art museum, opened in 2009 in the former house of mayor Leopold Vander Kelen, extended to a design by Stéphane Beel. Its collection of about 46,000 works runs from late-Gothic sculpture and paintings by Dieric Bouts and Rogier van der Weyden to 19th-century works by Constantin Meunier and Jef Lambeaux and contemporary art.

Leuven University Library on Ladeuzeplein was built from 1921 to 1928 with American donations, to designs by Whitney Warren, after German troops burned the old library in 1914. Burned again in 1940, it was rebuilt by 1951. Visitors see the oak-panelled reading room and climb the 80.5-metre tower, which holds a carillon of 63 bells.

Saint Peter's Church is a Brabantine Gothic church on Leuven's Grote Markt, built from about 1425 to 1497 opposite the Town Hall. Its unfinished west towers belong to the UNESCO-listed Belfries of Belgium and France. Inside, M Leuven presents Dieric Bouts' Last Supper and Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus in their original setting, beside the tomb of Duke Henry I of Brabant.

Museum in Tervuren, east of Brussels, built from 1904 to designs by Charles Girault and opened in 1910 to present King Leopold II's Congo Free State. After renovation from 2013 it reopened in December 2018 as AfricaMuseum, showing ethnographic, natural-history and contemporary collections from Central Africa and presenting the colonial period and its legacy.
