tourist attraction · Mechelen The Grote Markt is the main square of Mechelen, covering about one hectare beside St. Rumbold's Cathedral. The City Hall stands on it, and historic houses line it, among them De Beyaerd with its stepped gable and four lions, bought by the city in 1383, and In het Haentien of 1773 with a gilded cockerel on its gable.

St. Rumbold's Cathedral is the metropolitan cathedral of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels, begun shortly after 1200 and consecrated in 1312. Its unfinished tower, built from 1452 to 1520, is 97 metres high and part of the UNESCO-listed Belfries of Belgium and France; inside are Anthony van Dyck's Crucifixion and a high altar by Lucas Faydherbe.
