Kalmar Art Museum is a regional art museum run by the Kalmar Art Society and opened in 1942. Since 2008 it has occupied a black, four-storey timber-clad building in the City Park beside Kalmar Castle, designed by Tham & Videgård. It shows contemporary art and works from the society's collection, including Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson and Vera Nilsson.

Kalmar Cathedral stands on Stortorget on the island of Kvarnholmen and was designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder in a classical Baroque style. Building began in 1660, was interrupted by the Scanian War and was completed in 1703. The walls are of limestone from Gotland, and the corner towers carry copper-covered domes.

Kalmar County Museum is the regional museum of cultural history for Kalmar County, housed since 1987 in the former Kalmar steam mill by the harbour. One floor shows finds from the royal warship Kronan, which exploded and sank off Öland in 1676, including bronze cannons and coin hoards; other exhibitions cover the illustrator Jenny Nyström and the county's past.

St. Severin is a Lutheran parish church in the Sylt village of Keitum, built in the Romanesque style and first recorded in 1240. Tree-ring tests dated its roof timbers to 1216, making it the oldest religious building in Schleswig-Holstein. Its squat 15th-century tower once doubled as a navigation mark for sailors and, later, a prison.

tourist attraction · Sylt A reddish line of sea cliffs on Sylt's west coast, between the villages of Wenningstedt and Kampen, rising about 30 metres above the beach. The cliff formed from glacial till deposited roughly 120,000 years ago, and its rust-coloured iron-rich clay has long served sailors as a landmark for the island.

A Neolithic passage grave near Wenningstedt on Sylt, built around 3200-3000 BC and covered by an earth mound about 3.5 metres high. Twelve boulders and three capstones weighing around 20 tonnes each form the burial chamber, reached through a six-metre passage that visitors can still walk into.

A zoo in the Stellingen district, founded in 1907 by Carl Hagenbeck Jr. after his father began collecting animals arriving through Hamburg's port in 1863. It was the first zoo to use open enclosures separated by moats instead of barred cages, a design that influenced zoo architecture worldwide. The grounds also include a tropical aquarium.

Hamburger Kunsthalle is the art museum of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, one of the largest in Germany. It occupies three connected buildings dating from 1869, 1921 and 1997, between the Hauptbahnhof and the Alster lakes. Chocoversum is a chocolate museum in Hamburg's Kontorhaus quarter, opposite the Speicherstadt and near the Chilehaus. Opened in December 2011, it offers a 90-minute guided tour covering cacao cultivation and chocolate production, ending with tastings of the finished product.

historic building · Hamburg A ten-storey office building in Hamburg's Kontorhaus District, designed by architect Fritz Höger and built from 1922 to 1924 for shipping magnate Henry B. Sloman. Built with 4.8 million dark bricks, its narrow eastern end is shaped like a ship's prow, an example of 1920s Brick Expressionism. It became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
