    Glasgow City Chambers is the seat of Glasgow City Council on the east side of George Square, designed by William Young in Beaux-Arts style and inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1888. The sculpted pediment marks her Golden Jubilee, and inside, the banqueting hall is decorated with murals by the painters known as the Glasgow Boys.

    Glasgow Cathedral is the oldest building in Glasgow and one of only two medieval cathedrals in Scotland to survive the Reformation almost intact. Built mostly in the 13th century in Gothic style, it is now a Church of Scotland parish church, and the tomb of Saint Mungo, the city's patron saint, lies in its Lower Church.

  • Glasgow Necropolis

    The Glasgow Necropolis is a Victorian garden cemetery on a hill east of Glasgow Cathedral, opened in 1833 after the model of Père Lachaise in Paris. Paths climb past about 3,500 monuments, including tombs designed by Alexander Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to the column of John Knox of 1825 on the summit. The entrance is over the Bridge of Sighs.

    Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is a red sandstone building in Spanish Baroque style in Kelvingrove Park, designed by John W. Simpson and E. J. Milner Allen and opened in 1901 for the Glasgow International Exhibition. Its 22 galleries hold about 8,000 objects, from natural history and armour to Dalí's Christ of Saint John of the Cross.

  • Hunterian Museum

    The Hunterian Museum belongs to the University of Glasgow and occupies the Gilbert Scott Building on the Gilmorehill campus. Founded on the bequest of the physician William Hunter, it opened in 1807 as Scotland's first public museum. Its displays include Roman finds from the Antonine Wall, fossils and minerals, and Lord Kelvin's scientific instruments.

    The Riverside Museum is Glasgow's museum of transport and technology, housed since 2011 in a building by Zaha Hadid Architects with a zigzag roofline, where the River Kelvin meets the Clyde. It shows trams, locomotives, cars and bicycles and a recreated Glasgow street, and the sailing ship Glenlee, launched in 1896, is moored alongside.

    The Burrell Collection is a museum in Pollok Country Park on the south side of Glasgow, holding the art collection that the shipowner Sir William Burrell and his wife Constance gave to the city in 1944. Its glass-walled building by Barry Gasson, John Meunier and Brit Andresen opened in 1983 and reopened in 2022 after a six-year refurbishment.
