The Gothenburg Museum of Art closes Götaplatsen at the top of Kungsportsavenyen, in a yellow-brick building by Sigfrid Ericson opened in 1925. Its collection of over 70,000 works centres on Nordic art from the 15th century on, with the Fürstenberg Gallery showing Krøyer, Larsson, Munch and Zorn. The building also houses the Hasselblad Center for photography.

historic site · Gothenburg Skansen Kronan is a redoubt on the Risåsberget hill above the Haga district, designed by Erik Dahlbergh and built from 1687 to keep attackers from placing artillery above Gothenburg. The octagonal stone tower, with walls four to five metres thick, is topped by a gilded crown. The interior is a function venue; the hilltop with its cannons is open to walk around.

The Röhsska Museum is Sweden's museum of design, fashion and applied arts, founded in 1904 with bequests from the Röhss brothers and opened in 1916 on Vasagatan. Its red-brick National Romantic building by Carl Westman holds over 50,000 objects, from Swedish and European furniture, glass and ceramics to Chinese and Japanese crafts and 20th-century fashion.

historic building · Gothenburg Feskekörka, Gothenburg dialect for 'fish church', is an indoor fish market hall on the Rosenlund Canal, opened in 1874 to designs by city architect Victor von Gegerfelt. Its steep roofs and tall pointed windows recall a neo-Gothic church. Under the open timber roof are fish and seafood counters, and the hall also holds several restaurants and a bar.

Trädgårdsföreningen is a 19th-century park in central Gothenburg between the Vallgraven moat and Nya Allén, founded in 1842 on the initiative of the amateur botanist Henric Elof von Normann. Its centrepiece is the Palm House, a glass and iron greenhouse from 1878; the park also holds the Gothenburg Rosarium with several thousand roses, lawns, cafés and sculptures.

Gothenburg Cathedral, also called Gustavi Cathedral, is the seat of the Church of Sweden's bishop of Gothenburg. The present neoclassical church by Carl Wilhelm Carlberg replaced a building lost in the fire of 1802; it was consecrated in 1815 and its tower finished in 1825. Inside, white and gold Empire fittings surround an 18th-century altar saved from the fire.

The Museum of Gothenburg occupies the East India House on Norra Hamngatan, built in the mid-18th century as the offices and warehouses of the Swedish East India Company. Founded in 1861, it covers the history of Gothenburg and West Sweden from the Stone Age to today, and displays the Äskekärr ship, the only original Viking ship shown in Sweden.

Maritiman is a museum of historic ships moored at Packhuskajen on the Göta älv in central Gothenburg, opened in 1987 by a foundation set up to save vessels from scrapping. Visitors go aboard the destroyer HSwMS Småland, the submarine Nordkaparen, the monitor Sölve, tugboats and a fire boat, and walk through engine rooms, cabins and bridges.

Kalmar Castle stands on the shore of Kalmarsund, where a defensive tower was built around 1180. King Magnus Ladulås surrounded it with a curtain wall and round towers in the late 13th century, the Kalmar Union was formed here in 1397, and the Vasa kings rebuilt it as a Renaissance palace in the 16th century. Visitors see the royal halls, the chapel and exhibitions.
