Alcobaça Monastery

Alcobaça Monastery is a Cistercian abbey founded in 1153 by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. Its church, consecrated in 1252, was among the first Gothic buildings in the country and holds the carved tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro; visitors also walk through the cloister, the dormitory and the refectory.
