About Montreal
Montreal is a French-speaking city on an island in the St. Lawrence River, with Mount Royal at its centre. Old Montreal keeps stone streets, Place Jacques-Cartier and the Notre-Dame Basilica, and the Old Port lines the river below. Pointe-à-Callière shows the city's beginnings on an archaeological site, and the Château Ramezay is a governor's residence from 1705. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts fills several pavilions on Sherbrooke Street, and Saint Joseph's Oratory rises on the slope of Mount Royal, whose park has paths and a lookout over downtown. The Biosphère stands on Île Sainte-Hélène, and the Botanical Garden lies in the east of the city.
