About Kyoto
Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital for more than a thousand years and keeps hundreds of temples, shrines and gardens. Fushimi Inari-taisha's paths of red torii gates climb a hill in the south, and Kiyomizu-dera's wooden stage looks over the eastern hills above the lanes of Higashiyama and Yasaka Shrine. Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, and the rock garden of Ryōan-ji are in the north-west, Ginkaku-ji at the start of the Philosopher's Path. Nijō Castle and the Imperial Palace are in the centre, and Sanjūsangen-dō holds a thousand wooden statues. In Arashiyama, Tenryū-ji and the bamboo grove lie beside the river. Three days cover the main sights; buses and trains link them.
