About San Francisco
San Francisco sits at the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific and the bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge to the north and Alcatraz offshore. Ferries to Alcatraz leave from Pier 33 near Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39, where the Aquarium of the Bay and the Exploratorium stand along the Embarcadero. Golden Gate Park holds the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences and the Japanese Tea Garden, and SFMOMA is downtown near Union Square. Cable cars climb Nob Hill to Grace Cathedral, and Lombard Street and Coit Tower are a short walk away. Three days cover the city; Muir Woods needs a car or a tour.
