About Tainan
Tainan was Taiwan's capital until 1887 and its oldest city, with Dutch-era forts, the island's oldest Confucius temple and many folk temples. The Dutch East India Company built Fort Zeelandia in Anping in the 1620s and Fort Provintia, now Chihkan Tower, in 1653. Koxinga drove the Dutch out in 1662, and the Confucius Temple of 1665, the Grand Matsu Temple and the Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple stand in the old centre with the Hayashi Department Store of 1932. Anping has the Tree House and the Eternal Golden Castle. The Chimei Museum, the National Museum of Taiwan History and the Sicao mangrove tunnel lie on the city's edge.
