About Cairo
Cairo, Egypt's capital on the Nile, spreads from its medieval Islamic quarter to the pyramid plateau of Giza on the western edge. The Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx stand about 13 km west of Tahrir Square, beside the Grand Egyptian Museum. The Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization hold much of the pharaohs' art. In the old city, the Citadel, the mosques of Ibn Tulun, Al-Azhar and Sultan Hassan, Al-Muizz Street and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar sit close together, and Coptic Cairo has the Hanging Church and the Coptic Museum. Saqqara's Step Pyramid and the pyramids of Dahshur lie to the south.
