About Hanoi
Hanoi is Vietnam's capital, a city of lakes, with the Old Quarter's narrow trade streets beside Hoàn Kiếm Lake and the colonial avenues to the south. Ngọc Sơn Temple stands on an island in Hoàn Kiếm Lake, reached by the red Thê Húc Bridge. To the west lie the Temple of Literature, the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long and Ba Đình, with the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace and the One Pillar Pagoda. The Opera House and the National Museum of History stand in the French quarter, and Hỏa Lò Prison recalls the colonial era and the war. Two or three days cover the centre, mostly on foot.
