About Alexandria
Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great, is Egypt's second city, stretched along the Mediterranean around its eastern harbour. The Citadel of Qaitbay stands on the site of the ancient Pharos lighthouse at the end of the eastern harbour, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a library and cultural centre, faces the sea near the old royal quarter. The Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa and Pompey's Pillar date from Roman times, and Kom el-Dikka has a Roman theatre and baths. The Graeco-Roman Museum, the Alexandria National Museum and the Royal Jewelry Museum hold the city's collections, and the Montaza gardens lie by the sea in the east.
