About Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is northern Thailand's main city, its old town ringed by a moat and brick walls, with the mountain of Doi Suthep rising to the west. Inside the moat stand Wat Chedi Luang, whose great chedi was damaged by an earthquake in the 16th century, Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chiang Man, the city's oldest temple. Tha Phae Gate opens east towards the night bazaar and the river. On the mountain, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is reached by a staircase of more than 300 steps, and Wat Umong has tunnels in a forest. The zoo and the Night Safari lie at the foot of the hills.
