Thailand pairs Buddhist temples and royal palaces with beaches; Vizgu covers Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui. Bangkok has the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Wat Pho with its reclining Buddha and Wat Arun across the Chao Phraya, plus markets and Muay Thai stadiums. Ayutthaya, the old royal capital, is a day trip north, its brick temples ruined in 1767. Chiang Mai, in the northern hills, has more than a hundred temples inside and around its old walls, and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep above the city. Pattaya is the beach resort closest to Bangkok. Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui are islands and coasts with beaches, viewpoints and hilltop Buddhas. Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees. The country uses the baht, and street stalls and smaller temples take cash only.
