About Rotorua
Rotorua lies on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua in a geothermal area of the North Island, the home of the Te Arawa people. Steam rises from parks and backyards across the town. At Whakarewarewa, Te Puia shows the Pōhutu geyser, mud pools and a carving school, and the living village beside it is still home to Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao families. The Tudor-style Bath House stands in the Government Gardens near the Polynesian Spa, and St Faith's Church stands at Ōhinemutu on the lakeshore. South of the town are Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu and the Buried Village of Te Wairoa; Hell's Gate lies to the east.
