About Nara
Nara was Japan's capital in the eighth century, and its temples, shrines and deer park keep much of that time. Nara Park, where several hundred deer roam freely, connects the main sights on foot. Tōdai-ji's Great Buddha Hall holds a bronze Buddha about fifteen metres tall, Kōfuku-ji has a five-storey pagoda and Kasuga-taisha's paths are lined with stone and bronze lanterns. The Nara National Museum shows Buddhist art, and the Isui-en garden lies next to Tōdai-ji. To the west, the excavated Heijō Palace site, Yakushi-ji and Tōshōdai-ji are a short train or bus ride away. A day covers the park; trains from Kyoto and Osaka take under an hour.
