About Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States, with the Capitol, the White House and the Smithsonian museums around the National Mall. The Capitol stands at the east end of the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial at the west, with the Washington Monument between them. Smithsonian museums such as the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of Natural History line the Mall beside the National Gallery of Art, and the Library of Congress sits behind the Capitol. The White House lies just north of the Mall. Three days cover the main sights; the centre is walkable and the Metro reaches the rest.
