About Christchurch
Christchurch, the largest city of the South Island, lies on the Canterbury Plains beside the Port Hills, rebuilt after the Canterbury earthquakes. The Avon River winds through Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens, past the Gothic stone buildings of the Arts Centre. In the rebuilt centre are the Christchurch Art Gallery, Cathedral Square with the cathedral under reinstatement, the Cardboard Cathedral, the trams of New Regent Street and Quake City, which tells the story of the earthquakes. The International Antarctic Centre is beside the airport, and the Christchurch Gondola climbs the Port Hills above Lyttelton Harbour. Orana and Willowbank keep native and exotic animals.
