    Train World is the museum of the Belgian national railway company SNCB, set in the restored Schaerbeek station building and a new hall beside it. Opened in 2015 with scenography by the comics artist François Schuiten, it shows 22 locomotives and some 1,200 other objects, among them the 1845 Pays de Waes steam engine, and a driving simulator.

  • Mini-Europe

    Mini-Europe is a miniature park in Bruparck at the foot of the Atomium, opened in 1989. It shows around 350 buildings from about 80 European cities at a scale of 1:25, with working models such as trains, mills and an erupting Vesuvius, and ends with Spirit of Europe, an interactive exhibition about the European Union.

  • Atomium

    The Atomium is a 102-metre structure on the Heysel Plateau in Laeken, built as the centrepiece of the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and the architects André and Jean Polak, its nine steel-clad spheres model an iron crystal; six can be visited, with exhibitions and a view over the city from the top sphere.

    Design Museum Brussels occupies 5,000 square metres in the Trade Mart beside the Atomium. Opened in 2015 as the Art & Design Atomium Museum and renamed in 2020, it shows the Plastic Design Collection of plastic furniture and objects from the 1960s to the 2000s, a permanent display of Belgian design, and temporary exhibitions.

  • Groot-Bijgaarden Castle

    Moated castle in Groot-Bijgaarden, Dilbeek, west of Brussels, seat of the lords of Bijgaarden since the 12th century. A 14th-century gatehouse and a 30-metre tower of 1347 survive beside brick Flemish Renaissance wings from after 1634. It is not a museum: the 14-hectare park opens for the Floralia flower show in spring and Pumpkimania in autumn.

  • Royal Museum for Central Africa

    Museum in Tervuren, east of Brussels, built from 1904 to designs by Charles Girault and opened in 1910 to present King Leopold II's Congo Free State. After renovation from 2013 it reopened in December 2018 as AfricaMuseum, showing ethnographic, natural-history and contemporary collections from Central Africa and presenting the colonial period and its legacy.

  • Wellington Museum

    The Wellington Museum occupies a former inn of 1705 in the centre of Waterloo, where the Duke of Wellington had his headquarters on the nights of 17 and 18 June 1815 and wrote his despatch on the victory. Its rooms present the campaign and the battle with weapons, prints and objects from the armies that fought, and it holds temporary exhibitions.
