About Charleston
Charleston is a port city in South Carolina, on a peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, with Fort Sumter at the mouth of its harbour. The Battery runs along the tip of the peninsula, lined with 19th-century mansions and looking towards Fort Sumter, where the Civil War began in 1861. Rainbow Row's pastel Georgian houses face East Bay Street, and the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon stands at the foot of Broad Street. Across the harbour in Mount Pleasant lie the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point and Boone Hall Plantation. Middleton Place and Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, on the Ashley River, are reached by car.
