Mokuʻaikaua Church on Aliʻi Drive, opposite Huliheʻe Palace, belongs to the oldest Christian congregation in Hawaiʻi, founded in 1820 by the first American missionaries, who landed at Kailua. The present church was completed in 1837 of lava stone bound with coral mortar, with an interior of ʻōhiʻa and koa wood; its steeple rises over Kailua's waterfront.

Huliheʻe Palace on Aliʻi Drive in Kailua-Kona was built in 1838 of lava rock, coral lime and koa wood by John Adams Kuakini, governor of Hawaiʻi Island, and later served King Kalākaua as a summer residence. Since 1927 the Daughters of Hawaiʻi have run it as a museum of royal furniture, portraits and Hawaiian objects, overlooking Kailua Bay.
