Palace of Mafra

The Palace of Mafra is a Baroque palace, basilica and convent begun for King John V in 1717 to a final design by the German-born architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig. Visitors see the royal apartments and the library, a single hall of about 1,000 square metres holding some 30,000 volumes. The complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019.
