The Auschwitz Jewish Center in the centre of Oświęcim comprises the Chevra Lomdei Mishnayot Synagogue, built around 1913 and the only one of the town's 20 synagogues to survive, and a Jewish museum in the former Kornreich family house. Reopened in 2000, it tells the history of the Jewish community that made up close to 60 percent of the pre-war town.

Auschwitz I is the former main camp of Auschwitz, set up by Nazi Germany in 1940 in pre-war Polish army barracks; over 1.1 million people were murdered in the camp complex. The museum's exhibitions fill the brick blocks near the gate and Block 11. Entry is free with a timed reservation; guided visits with a museum educator are paid and required at peak hours.
