The Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, known as the Old Cathedral, is a Catholic church built in 1831–1834 in Greek Revival style near the St. Louis riverfront. It was the first cathedral west of the Mississippi and was kept when the surrounding blocks were cleared for the Gateway Arch, which now rises behind it. Pope John XXIII made it a basilica in 1961.
