Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi. It began in 1761 as a watchtower guarding the island's only freshwater well, grew into a fort that served as the ruling family's residence, and was enlarged in the 1930s. After a decade of conservation it reopened in 2018 as a museum of the city's history, with the House of Artisans nearby.

Al Maqta Fort is a watchtower on a small rock islet in the channel between Abu Dhabi island and the mainland, beside the Al Maqta Bridge. Built in the late 18th century of stone bound with gypsum, it watched the shallow crossing that caravans used at low tide to reach the island. Visitors see the restored tower from the shore.
