Ramparts of Aigues-Mortes

The ramparts of Aigues-Mortes enclose the town that Louis IX founded in the Camargue marshes as his port for the crusades. The 1,640 m wall, 11 m high, was built in the late 13th century beside the round Tour de Constance of the 1240s, later a prison for Protestants. Visitors climb the tower and walk along the top of the walls.
