Abbaye aux Hommes

The Abbaye aux Hommes was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror, who is buried in the choir of its Romanesque abbey church of Saint-Étienne. The monastery buildings were rebuilt between 1704 and 1790 and have housed Caen's town hall since the 1960s; visitors see the cloister and exhibitions on the Norman world of 1066–1204 and on the summer of 1944.
