Saqqara

Saqqara is the vast necropolis of ancient Memphis on the desert edge some 20 km south of central Cairo. At its centre stands the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built around 2670 BC by the architect Imhotep and the oldest monumental stone building in Egypt. Around it lie further pyramids, decorated mastaba tombs of officials, the Serapeum and the Imhotep Museum.
