Cahir Castle

Cahir Castle stands on a rocky island in the River Suir in the town of Cahir, about 16 km south of Cashel. Built in the 13th century, it was the stronghold of the Butler family and fell to the Earl of Essex in 1599, when heavy artillery was used against it. Visitors walk through its keep, courtyards and curtain walls, and an audiovisual show covers its history.
