Montenvers Railway

The Montenvers Railway is a metre-gauge rack railway that climbs 5.1 km from Chamonix to Montenvers station at 1,913 m, above the Mer de Glace glacier. Its first section opened in 1908 and the full line in 1909; red electric trains now take about 20 minutes, on gradients of 11 to 22 per cent.
