Stuðlagil

Stuðlagil is a canyon of the river Jökulsá á Dal in the Jökuldalur valley, about 44 km from Egilsstaðir, lined with tall hexagonal basalt columns. The walls were exposed after the Kárahnjúkar dam, completed in 2009, cut the river's flow, which also turned the water blue-green in summer. A viewing platform stands on the west bank; the east bank is reached on a 5 km walk.
