Forchtenstein Castle

Forchtenstein Castle rises on a hill at 511 metres above the Wulka valley, south of Mattersburg in northern Burgenland. The Lords of Mattersburg built its 50-metre keep in the early 15th century; from 1622 the Esterházy family fortified and extended it. Guided tours show the armoury and the treasury with the family's collections of jewellery, clocks and curiosities.
