Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu Underground City lies beneath the town of Derinkuyu, about 30 km south of Göreme. Carved into soft volcanic tuff and enlarged in Byzantine times, it reaches about 85 metres deep, with stables, wine presses, kitchens, a chapel, ventilation shafts and rolling stone doors that closed each level. Only part of it is open to visitors.
