Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery is Hamilton's regional museum and art gallery, opened in 1987 in a building by Ivan Mercep on the bank of the Waikato River, on Ngāti Wairere land. Its collections cover art, social history, science and tangata whenua, and its centrepiece is Te Winika, a carved waka taua (war canoe) about 200 years old.
