About Huế

Huế was Vietnam's imperial capital under the Nguyễn dynasty, a walled citadel on the Perfume River with royal tombs in the hills to the south. The Imperial City inside the citadel holds the throne hall, temples and gardens of the court, and the Huế Museum of Royal Fine Arts shows its objects. Upriver, the Thiên Mụ Pagoda's tower stands on the bank. The tombs of Minh Mạng, Tự Đức, Khải Định and Gia Long are spread over the countryside, each in its own landscape of pavilions and ponds, and reached by road or boat. Two days cover the citadel and the main tombs.
