Kealakekua Bay

Kealakekua Bay, about 20 km south of Kailua-Kona, is a marine life conservation district below steep cliffs. Captain James Cook anchored here in 1779 and was killed on its north shore at Kaʻawaloa, where a white obelisk of 1874 marks the spot. The state historical park includes Hikiau Heiau at Nāpōʻopoʻo; the reef by the monument is reached by boat, kayak or a steep trail.
