The Kyoto National Museum in the Higashiyama ward collects and shows pre-modern Japanese and Asian art: paintings, sculpture, calligraphy, ceramics and textiles. It opened in 1897 in the red-brick Meiji Kotokan designed by Katayama Tōkuma; exhibitions are now held in the Heisei Chishinkan wing by Yoshio Taniguchi, opened in 2014.

The Kyoto Railway Museum, owned by JR West, opened in 2016 as an expansion of the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum of 1972, west of Kyoto Station. Its three-storey main hall shows rolling stock from steam engines to Shinkansen trains, and its 1914 roundhouse, an Important Cultural Property, keeps steam locomotives around a working turntable.
