Temple of Poseidon at Sounion
The Temple of Poseidon stands on Cape Sounion, the southern tip of Attica, about 10 km south of Lavrio. Built in 444–440 BC on the ruins of an earlier temple probably destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC, it keeps a row of Doric marble columns on the headland. Sailors long used it as a landmark and called the cape Kavokolones, the Cape of Columns.
