Lion Monument

The Lion Monument is a rock relief of a dying lion, carved in 1820–21 by Lukas Ahorn into a cliff face after a design by Bertel Thorvaldsen. It commemorates the Swiss Guards killed in 1792 when revolutionaries stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris; a Latin inscription runs above the lion and a small pond lies below the cliff.
