St Mark's Cathedral is a Baroque church at the top of Kačić Square in the centre of Makarska, begun in 1700 at the initiative of Bishop Nikola Bijanković and consecrated in 1756. Now a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska, it keeps the relics of St Clement, the town's patron saint; its interior was altered after the earthquake of 1962.

The Malacological Museum is housed in the old wing of the Franciscan monastery in Makarska, a protected monument founded in 1518. Friar Jure Radić opened it in 1963 with the shell collection he had begun in 1959; more than 3,000 shells from the Adriatic and from tropical seas are on display, along with fossil ammonites, rudists and corals. The display was renewed in 2019.

Biokovo Nature Park, proclaimed in 1981, protects 195 square kilometres of the limestone range that rises behind the Makarska Riviera. From the entrance about 6 km east of Makarska a narrow road climbs to Sveti Jure, the summit at 1,762 m; at 1,228 m it passes the Skywalk, a horseshoe-shaped glass-floored platform reaching about 11 m beyond the cliff edge.
